The theory behind the ETO Fault Finding simulator: how the compressor and its relay starter work, step by step, and how to work on the panel safely.
The example throughout is No.1 main air compressor of a ship: a 30 kW motor on a 440 V, 60 Hz supply with a relay starter panel (SP-MAC1) and 220 V control voltage, charging two 3 m³ receivers to 30 bar.
- 01How a ship’s main air compressor worksThe air path of a two-stage marine air compressor, its drains and unloading, the safety valves and the 10-minute blow-down, and what the starter does at each step.
- 02Starting a main air compressor: checks, first run, start sequenceChecks before starting a ship’s main air compressor, the first run after overhaul and the start in MAN step by step: contactor, timers, oil pressure and loading.
- 03AUTO and lead / lag: two compressors on the receiversTwo main air compressors on the receivers: pressure switches at 27/30 and 24/30 bar, lead and lag, the STOP button trap in AUTO and the restart after a blackout.
- 04Stopping, trips and AMS alarmsStopping a main air compressor, emergency stop, trips on low oil pressure, high temperature and overload, reset, and the RUNNING, HEALTHY, FAIL TO START signals.
- 05Isolation and proving dead on a starter panelBefore hands-on work on a 440 V starter panel: permit, isolate, lock and tag, prove dead live – dead – live with a two-pole tester, megger safely, switch back on.
